The precursor to digital twins were "living models" used for lunar missions by NASA in the 1960s. Outside the expensive space frontier, the majority of sectors have used 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models and physical simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). These instances of living models have been expensive on time and resources with cutting edge computers of the day used to perform complex mathematical calculations, guided by skilled scientists and computer professionals over many months to achieve outputs worth using in the real world.
Fast-forward to today, the complex mathematics are performed on our handheld devices quickly without enormous power consumption.
